Stormy Castle, Gower

Stormy Castle lies at the juncture of two distinct landscapes. To the north and west lies the open exposed downland of Llanmadoc Hill and The Bulwark. To the south lies the gently rolling farmland with a field pattern formed by hedgerows. These landscapes of Llangenith, Llanmadoc and Cheriton are taken as inspiration to integrate the new house completely into the Gower landscape. The texture, pattern and form of the landscapes have been wrapped over the buildings, creating an ideal marriage of parent landscape with contemporary architecture. The house is set within grass covered earth banks, hedgerows and stone walls. The project has won a number of awards : Manser Medal 2014, RSAW Welsh Architecture Award 2014, National Eisteddfod Gold Medal 2014, Concrete Society 2014 Building Category winner, CIBSE South Wales Region Sustainable Project of the Year Award 2013.
