Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

The Royal Dockyard in Portsmouth is the oldest and one of the largest of its kind in the world. Camlins were appointed as masterplanner and design team leader for the construction of a new pedestrian route and events arena for the dockyard’s heritage area which attracts 500,000 visitors per year. Our role here was to coordinate all design activities and administer a number of contracts, including the installation of architectural, highway and special effects lighting. The project included substantial engineering works such as new pedestrian gangways across the existing ‘Mast Pond’ basin together with de-silting and construction of new lock gates. The scheme incorporates the concept of ‘urban processions’, here taking the name of ‘Victory Procession’, a new component of Portsmouth’s tourist network which leads visitors from the Victory Gate (1711) to HMS Victory herself. Despite the presence of twelve scheduled ancient monuments, Camlins’ design is contemporary and enjoys the approval of English Heritage.
