Poolbeg Masterplan, Dublin

Linking the city centre within walking distance to the Irish Sea, the Poolbeg peninsula terminates with a lighthouse on the causeway of Great South Wall, marking a threshold to the city of Dublin. It is the place where for centuries people have arrived at or departed from Ireland. A proposed plan for Poolbeg uniquely embraces several components which are essential for the life of the city, ranging from energy generation and water treatment to commercial exchange, domestic habitation and recreation. The whole is placed within a landscape plan containing five principal spatial types each with a specific character and purpose. Ultimately, the design intention is to transform an area dominated by industry and monolithic utility installations into a new multifunctional city sector within a landscape led framework. Taking its cue from ‘The Third Alignment’, the new composition for Poolbeg responds to four axes whose character exemplifies the underlying geometric and spatial structure of the peninsula.
