Hortsley, Seaford

Hortsley is a later living community of 38 apartments in the centre of Seaford, just a short walk from the sea. The front entrance is from Sutton Park Road, a busy shopping street. A gate passes through a massive knapped flint wall, into a secret garden. Ornamental planting is arranged around a central pond with water lilies. The main entrance into the lounge is framed by a veranda which joins with a pergola running the whole length of the garden, covered with climbing plants.

One of the most charming aspects of the design is the approach to all the apartments through a winter gallery on each floor. These are friendly communal living spaces filled with greenery and with views over the garden. The tempered conditions allow many semi tropical plants to thrive. The higher level apartments have terraces with views of the sea and coastal hills.
