Highgate Newtown Community Centre

This project will greatly enhance existing community facilities and provide new housing. The development has a distinct contemporary character, sitting comfortably between the classic Victorian Bertram Street and the suburban Croftdown Road. The proposals have emerged through engagement, ensuring relevance to the community in being safe, family friendly, useful and manageable day to day. The buildings are arranged around a new community courtyard. This is a truly multifunctional space, designed to accommodate informal activities and gatherings of up to 100 people. The combination of public thoroughfare, community and residential entrances will bring good passive surveillance. The community hall and café will spill out directly into the public space. The planting proposals include one very special specimen tree as a focus, with climbing plants on the buildings to bring vertical greenery and a friendly domestic atmosphere.
