Caernarfon, Gwynedd

Eager to design another part of Wales we were thrilled to be asked to join Purcell architects on the regeneration of a group of derelict buildings in Caernarfon which will see the creation of an artisan quarter with workspaces for small scale artisan design, manufacture and retail. The properties, which are all located on a plot of land known as the ‘island site’ on the town’s Slate Quay, will be revamped by Gwynedd Council after it won a share of a £2.5m funding pot from the Arts Council of Wales. Organisations including the Welsh Government, Caernarfon Harbour Trust, Galeri , Caernarfon Town Council and the Welsh Highland Railway will work together with the council on the scheme to breathe new life into the buildings, which are currently fenced off due to their hazardous condition. The project received planning permission in May 2017.
